Il FORTRAN IV, c'era solo quello. Non dico a scuola (anche se ok, anche lì) ma subito dopo quando mi sono trovato un armadio quattro stagioni con tanto di 512 KB di RAM con annesso un  comodino contenete un hard disk di 80 MB, troppo piccolo, sempre pieno e allora via con i nastri a scaricare quello che non usavi in quel momento. Ah, dimenticavo, c'erano 8 terminali collegati, poi potevi lanciare fino a due phantom jobs (quelli che adesso si chiamerebbero processi in background). E c'era anche una stampante ad aghi (solo lettere maiuscole) delle dimensioni di un comò. No, niente perforatrice e lettore di schede, eravamo moderni ormai (ma le loro unità di I/O erano riservate dal sistema operativo).

Ok, questo volevo dirlo prima di subito, una premessa prima di addentrarmi in Are There Generational Differences In First Coding Languages and Learning Resources? che dice che dovrei essere tra quelli che hanno iniziato con il BASIC (orrore!) o il C (orrore! ma diverso).
In realtà Slashdot rimanda a 2020 HackerRank Developer Skills Report, interessante ma americano.

Una cosa ancora: il C era Unix e da noi allora non c'era; sono quasi sicuro (almeno 3 sigma) che fosse solo per Bell Labs e Università, non so se anche le nostre. Invece il Basic (non ce la faccio a scrivere tutto maiuscolo come allora si usava (doveva)) arrivato allora-allora per i nerds e successivamente per tutti (ok, non proprio tutti ma chi lo voleva poteva permetterselo) io lo guardavo con sufficienza, roba da geeks, non seria. Guardavo in modo simile --anche se per altro motivo-- i commerciali, quelli del COBOL, anche se erano quelli che trafficavano con i $oldi e si sa che...

Poi, il mondo è piccolo, sul mio macchinone arriva anche il Basic, una versione base ma un mio amico che lavorava da un'altra parte con una macchina più recente e potente aveva il Basic come si deve. Andò a finire che provammo a installare la sua versione sulla mia macchina (pazzi, versione diversa del OS!) e --incredibile-- funzionò! Poi arriva da Milano il tecnico dell'Assistenza (allora era praticamente obbligatoria, indispensabile, il disco andava in crash ogni 6 mesi) mi chiese come mai... Fui salvato da un tecnico locale, lo stesso che mi passò un nastro con un Lisp (che avevo scoperto via Douglas Hofstadter, quello del GEB) non ufficiale con il quale provai a pasticciare. Arrivò anche il Pascal ma mi fu vietato di usarlo mescolandolo al Fortran. Soprattutto arrivò il CPL, Command Process Language, rimediava alla carenza di Command (la shell si direbbe ora) che non era programmabile. E allora via con le personalizzazioni.

Ma ormai era ora di cambiare e, a parte il meraviglioso Turbo Pascal mi trovai come quelli descritti da HackerRank.

Oggi? completamente diverso, tutti sul Web, con Javascript (bleah!) e qualcuno con linguaggi funzionali (no, sono troppo vecchio per vedere cosa sono).
